Biographical History

(Fir) First Lutheran services were held by Rev. C. Jorgenson of Bellingham in 1878. Organizing services of the congregation (Den Evangeliske Lutherske Menighed of Skagit) were held at the Fir School House on September 16, 1888. Construction of the church began in 1896, being completed and dedicated in 1902. (Conway) The Conway Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation was organized April 6, 1895, with Rev. Tobias J. Moen of Bellingham as organizing pastor. The Conway church was built in 1905. (Fir-Conway) With the building of the bridge across the Skagit River in 1913, it became evident the destiny of the two congregations was together. After the merger in 1917, the larger Fir church was used, and the Conway church was used for Norwegian services a few times a year until after World War II. The Ladies' Aid was formed August 18, 1894 and contunues to this day as the Fir-Conway Lutheran Church Women. The Sunday School was organized in 1996, and religious summer school began in 1904.
