Atkinson, Henry, 1782-1842

Henry Atkinson was a United States soldier. He commanded an expedition to the mouth of the Yellowstone River in 1819, in which the main force advanced only to Council Bluffs on the Missouri River. In 1824 a second expedition, commanded by Atkinson and Benjamin O'Fallon, reached the mouth of the Yellowstone and concluded treaties with Indian tribes in the West. Atkinson established Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, and he was in command of United States soldiers in the Black Hawk War.

Andrew Jackson was president of the United States, 1829-1837. In 1820 he was commander of the United States Army Division of the South.

Career army officer, commander of two expeditions to the upper Missouri River (1819 and 1825), and founder of the Jefferson Barracks.

In 1825 Atkinson led a large force up the Missouri from Council Bluffs in keel boats propelled by hand-driven paddle wheels of his own design. As United States commissioner with Benjamin O'Fallon, Atkinson negotiated treaties of trade and friendship with seventeen Indian tribes and returned his escort intact to Council Bluffs.
