Biographical History

Samuel Smith was a veteran of both the Revolution and the War of 1812 who made his living in shipping. A Republican, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1793-1803 and 1816-1822, and to the United States Senate, serving from 1803-1815 and 1822-1833. One of the founders of the Bank of Maryland in 1790, his successful efforts to reason with the rioters in 1835 resulted in his being elected mayor of Baltimore, a position he held until 1838.
