Biographical History

The University of Montana was founded in 1893, in Missoula, Montana. Classes did not begin until 1895 and the formation of student activities soon followed. The faculty was petitioned by students in order to form clubs, associations, and entertainments. Among the student organizations were the Shakespeare Club, Quill and Dagger for dramatics, associations for engineers, clubs for oratory and debate, literary societies, fraternities and honorary societies. In the second year of the University a Silver Cornet Band was organized, with severe penalties for failure to attend practice. Silent Sentinel and Penetralia were formed to “further the best interests of the University.” ASUM (the Associated Students of The University of Montana) composed of students, faculty, and alumni, was organized. ASUM and several other student organizations still exist today, though changed by the times.
