Biographical History

(For history of the Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA), see OCLC #38889555.) The Division of Mission Services was established at the LCUSA's founding to further cooperation among the LCUSA church bodies in their mission activities in the U.S. and abroad. The Division's American Indian Services program sought to increase awareness and understanding of Native Americans, to share with them in mission and ministry, and to enable pastors and congregations to establish trust relationships with Native Americans in their communities. Eugene Crawford directed the Division's program and the program of the National Indian Lutheran Board, established in 1970 at the initiation of the Lutheran Church and Indian People (LUCHIP) and supported by the LCUSA. In 1973, the Division of Mission Services and Division of Welfare.

Services merged to become the Division of Mission and Ministry. The American Indian Services program was continued under this new division. The LCUSA was terminated in 1987 at the founding of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
