Biographical History

Raymond V. Schoder was born in 1916 in Battle Creek, Michigan. After high school he entered the Jesuit order at Milford, Ohio. Following novitiate, he had two years of liberal art studies followed by three years of philosophy. He taught for three years and then studied theology at West Baden College. By the time he was through with his studies he had received an M.A. in Classical Literature and a Ph. D. in Classical Studies. Schoder arrived at Loyola after teaching at several high schools and universities. For the next 27 years he taught Classical Studies, wrote numerous books, and helped found Cardinal Newman College. He is best known for his publications "Masterpieces of Greek Art", "Ancient Greece from the Air", and his work on Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.
