Biographical History
Mahoney is a Princeton University professor of the history of science. This tape is part of a larger oral history of the UNIX system, commissioned by AT & T Bell Laboratories.
Michael S. Mahoney was born in New York City on June 30, 1939. He graduated from Harvard University in 1960 and began working on his doctorate in history of science at Princeton University in 1962 after two years in Munich as a German Foreign Exchange Service Fellow. Mahoney completed his degree in 1967 and immediately was appointed as an assistant professor at Princeton. His research focused on both the early development of mathematics and the history of computing and information technology. He taught courses at Princeton in both fields. Mahoney was also professionally involved in the National Faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences; the History of Science Society (HSS); the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT); and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Mahoney passed away on July 23, 2008.
