Biographical History
The steamship Savannah was launched as a sailing vessel in New York's East River on August 22, 1818. She was bought by the Savannah Steamship Company, which converted the vessel to steam as an auxiliary to sail. She left Savannah, Georgia, under the command of Captain Moses Rogers on May 22, 1819, bound for Liverpool, England, where she landed on June 20. After making calls in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Russia, she returned to Savannah on November 30, 1819. She was the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
