Biographical History

The Harrison family, descendants of Benjamin Harrison, Clerk of the House of Virginia (fl. 1642), were a wealthy Virginia family of planters, soldiers, and politicians. Among the most prominent family members were Benjamin Harrison (1673-1710), speaker of the House of Burgessess, Treasurer and Attorney General of Virginia and Benjamin Harrison (ca. 1726-1791), Governor of Virginia in 1782-1784 and father of President William Henry Harrison. His other son, Benjamin Harrison, Jr. (d. 1799), Paymaster General of the Southern Department, was engaged in the tobacco trade.
