Biographical History

The Schaw Auxiliary Hospital was built and endowed by Miss Marjorie Schaw and gifted to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary as a convalescent home. It opened in 1895-1896 . In 1948 it was absorbed into the National Health Service under the Board of Management for the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and in 1974 was placed in the Western District of the Greater Glasgow Health Board. During the Second World War the Schaw was used as an 'overflow' unit for patients requiring medical attention rather than simple recuperation. In the post war period the Schaw became a geriatric hospital. It was sold to the private sector in 1986 .
