Fur trader; soldier, War of 1812, Black Hawk War; postmaster, Rock Island, Illinois, 1825; one of the founders of Davenport, Iowa, 1835.

Soldier, Rock Island, Ill., fur trader, and a founder of Davenport, Iowa.

Born in Lincolnshire, Eng., George Davenport served in the U.S. army for ten years and acted as a government provisions contractor in Kentucky before arriving in Rock Island in 1816. There he began to trade with the Sauk, Fox, and Winnebago Indians in Illinois, Iowa, and southern Wisconsin. Davenport joined the American Fur Company in 1822 and had charge of the trade from the mouth of the Iowa River north to the Turkey River.
