Biographical History

Incorporated in 1900 as the John O'Brien Lumber Company under the laws of Minnesota, the company purposed to manufacture and sell railroad ties--primarily for the use of GN--as well as to manufacture and sell commercial lumber products to Montana and North Dakota settlers. Subsequent ventures in Montana included a sawmill at Flathead Lake near Somers and several lumber yards(some in North Dakota). In 1906, another mill near Whitefish was purchased and operated as the Whitefish Lumber Company (changed to Somers Lumber Company in 1907, which took over and operated a tie treating plant at Somers from 1921 to 1940). Liquidated in 1940, the corporation's property and assets accrued to the Glacier Park Hotel Company (later changed to Glacier Park Co.). The Somers corporation was completely dissolved in 1945, its property being operated as the Somers Lumber Division of the Glacier Park Company until 1962.
