Biographical History
Dr. Michael Schwartz was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Northwestern University, but left school during his junior year after passing the certified public accountant exam. He went on to earn several degrees including a bachelor's in psychology, a master's in industrial relations, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Illinois. From 1962 to 1976 Schwartz taught psychology and sociology at Wayne State University, Indiana University, and Florida Atlantic University. He served as Dean of the College of Social Sciences at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He came to Kent State University in March 1976, serving as Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research. He was also a professor of sociology and psychology. He was appointed Acting Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs by President Brage Golding in 1977. The following spring, he was appointed permanently to the position. Schwartz served as Acting President during the summer of 1977 after the departure of Glenn A. Olds and before Golding's arrival. In 1980 he was given the additional title Provost ranking him the second senior officer of the university. Schwartz became Kent State's ninth president in 1982.
