Ethelbert Dudley Warfield was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on March 10, 1861. After obtaining his bachelor's and master's degrees from Princeton, he returned to Lexington to practice law from 1886 to 1888. In 1888 Warfield became the youngest President of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Warfield brought to Miami a number of fellow young Ivy Leaguers who were dubbed by townsfolk his "Dude Faculty. During his brief tenure, Warfield sought to bring greater rigor to the Miami academic curriculum, while the Dude Faculty introduced football to the student body. Desirous of administering a private liberal arts institution, Warfield in 1891 became President of Lafayette College, Pennsylvania where he served from 1891 to 1914. While at Lafayette, Warfield was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry. In 1915, he became President of Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, a post he held until shortly before his death on July 6, 1936.
