Hartwig, Hellmut Arthur Albin, 1910-1999.

Hellmut Arthur Albin Hartwig was born in Berlin in 1910, and was a professor in the Foreign Languages and Literatures department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1948 to 1976. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and for a series of intensive German language institutes and exchanges that he established and administrated between 1961 and 1966 during his tenure at Carbondale. One of the institutes was established with the support of the United States Office of Education. In 1949 he organized a Goethe Bicentennial program on campus that brought specialists from around the globe. He was also an active member of several professional associations at the local level and abroad, including the Jean Paul Gesellshaft of Bayreuth, and the local Carbondale chapter of American Association of University Professors. He attained the rank of professor in 1957 and succeeded J. Cary Davis as Chair of the department in 1967. He wrote several articles; edited a book, titled Southern Illinois Goethe Celebration, a Collection of Nine Papers 1950, and won a Fulbright Grant from the Department of State in 1954. He died on June 26th, 1999.
