Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, originally named Louisa Railroad in Louisa County, Virginia, was founded in 1836 and reached the foot of the Appalachian Mountains at what is now Clifton Forge by 1850. The company was organized as The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1869. It reorganized as The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1878. In 1987 it merged into CSX Transportation, Inc.
The corporate lineage encompasses over 200 predecessor companies. In 1972 it merged with Baltimore & Ohio to form the Chessie System, Inc.
