Politician, lawyer; born Daniel Ray Coats in Jackson, Michigan, May 16, 1943; graduated from Wheaton College (Ill.), 1965; graduated from Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, 1971; admitted to Indiana bar, 1972; served as Dan Quayle's district representative in Indiana, 1977-1980; represented Indiana as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives for 4 terms, 1981-1988; appointed to fill Quayle's vacated Indiana U.S. Senate seat beginning in 1989 and served until 1999; in the Senate, served on the Armed Services Committee, Select Committee for Intelligence and the Labor and Human Resources Committee; joined with Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) in advocating defense reform and transformation initiatives; main legislative agenda was The Project for American Renewal, released as a book, Mending Fences: Renewing Justice between Government and Civil Society, 1998; became special counsel at Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand in Washington, D.C., 1999; then appointed ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany by Pres. George W. Bush, 2001.
