Biographical History
Edwin O. Guthman (b. 1919) served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and Harvard University. From 1941 to 1947, he was a reporter for the Seattle Star, and from 1947 to 1961, he reported for the Seattle Times. In 1950, Guthman won the Pulitzer Prize for National reporting. From 1961 to 1964, he was Special Assistant for Public Information at the U.S. Department of Justice, and in 1965 was Press Secretary for Senator Robert Kennedy. From 1965 to 1977, he was the National Editor of the Los Angeles Times, and from 1977 to 1987, he was Editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer. In 1987 he joined the faculty of the University of Southern California's School of Journalism.
