Biographical History
Born in Bellingborough, Lincolnshire, England, Joshua Shaw was initially a sign painter in Manchester, then became known as a painter of portraits, flowers, still life, landscapes and cattle pieces, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy in London. In 1817, Shaw settled in Philadelphia and began travelling through the South, making sketches and taking subscriptions for series of American views, which he engraved and published. Shaw frequently exhibited work in New York, Boston and Baltimore and Philadelphia where he was a founder of the Artists' Fund Society. Shaw was also known as an inventor and made several improvements to firearms for which he later received awards from the United States and Russian governments. Ca. 1843, Shaw moved to Bordentown, New Jersey. He became stricken with paralysis and died in Burlington on September 8, 1860.
