Biographical History

Toledo area artist and art teacher.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Grant was primarily a self-taught artist. During World War II he was a prisoner in Auschwitz and other prison camps, where he saved his life through creating art for Nazi prison guards. After the war, he emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Detroit where he made original designs for a paint-by-number company, the Palmer-Pann Corporation. He followed the company when it moved to Toledo, OH, under the name of the Craft Master Corporation. During his career at the company he also devoted himself to painting, and eventually he left the commercial art world to paint full time. His works, dominated by the female figure, are well known for their sculptural qualities and old master effects. His paintings have been shown extensively in the Toledo area, winning many awards. Some of his works are held in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, and in a number of corporate, university, and other regional collections. He also exhibited in Paris, France.
