Biographical History
Emily Kaiyala Hayes Atzel was born in Ironwood, Mich., on 17 Nov. 1903, the daughter of Finnish immigrants Jakko and Susanna Kaiyala. She and her parents moved to Butte, Mont., in 1904. In 1921 she married Ed Hayes, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. The couple moved to Chicago in 1923 where Emily went to work as a secretary at the IWW national headquarters. In the 1930s she separated from Ed Hayes and moved to Aberdeen, Wash. There she met and married Oscar Atzel, and the couple moved to Seattle where Emily worked as the head secretary for the King County Welfare Dept. until she retired in 1968. She died in July 1981.
