Biographical History
Patricia O'Connor,'39, practiced a year in Charleston, West Virginia. After marrying John Lewis Halloran, Jr.in 1940, they moved to Staten Island to assist in his father's general veterinary practice. In 1942, she accepted a job offer at the Staten Island Zoo, becoming the first woman zoo veterinarian. She remained in the position until 1970, becoming nationally recognized for her numerous articles and combining zoo medicine with public education and scientific writing. She is especially known for her 1955 compendium and bibliography on the pathology of wild birds and mammals. After her husband died, she kept his small-animal practice going as well as kept up her zoo responsibilities. From 1966-1982 she was consultant for the experimental animal colony at the U.S. Public Health Hospital on Staten Island. In 1999 she retired to Indiana where she died July 8, 2003.
