Biographical History
Charles Frederick Colson (1896-1970) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from West Point in 1918 and commissioned in the infantry in the same year. Between 1926 and 1929, he served in the Philippines. In 1937 he graduated from Command and General Staff School. During World War II, he was deputy chief of staff of the XXII Corps and assistant division commander of the 88th Infantry Division. In November 1944 he made brigadier general. From 1944 to 1945, he was commanding general of Combat Command "A" in the 8th Armored Division. After the war, he reverted to the rank of colonel. From 1952 until his retirement in July 1953, he was commanding general of the Military District of Washington. He received the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars.
