Biographical History
The Theatre Royal in Drury Lane was built in London in 1663 on the site of an early 17th-century cockpit. The theater was later known as the Royal Theatre, Drury Lane, and then the Drury Lane Theatre.
Under managing director Sir Alfred Butt, the 1920s saw The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane enjoy great box office success with musicals such as Rose Marie, Desert Song and Show Boat .
Rose Marie is an operetta-style musical with music by Rudolf Friml and Herbert Stothart, and book and lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was produced at Drury Lane in London in March 1925, enjoying an extraordinary run of 581 performances and closed in March 1927. The original production had a chorus of eighty and was London's most successful Broadway show after World War I until it was surpassed by Oklahoma! in 1947.
