U.S. representative and businessman from Maine; b. in New Salem, Mass.; moved with parents to Houlton, Me., 1822 where engaged in extensive lumber operations and also in agricultural and mercantile pursuits; state legislator (1832-1853, 1862); elected as Democrat to 28th Congress in 1844 and served until 3 Mar. 1845; candidate of Liberty Party for Governor in 1854.
