Biographical History
Garner E. Shriver, Republican, served eight terms in the United States House of Representatives as Congressman for the Fourth Congressional District of Kansas. During the 87th and 88th Congresses he served on the House Judiciary Committee, and in the 89th Congress he was appointed to the powerful House Committee on Appropriations.
Shriver also held the distinction of ranking member of the Foreign Operations Subcommittee and was a member of the Labor and Health, Education and Welfare Subcommittee. In the 94th Congress, he was appointed to the newly created House Budget Committee. In addition, he was President of the 87th Congress Club in the House of Representatives and served on the Republican Policy Committee and the Executive Committee of the Committee on Committees.
Prior to his election to Congress in 1960, Mr Shriver served two terms (1947-1951) in the Kansas House of Representatives and two four year terms in the Kansas Senate (1953-1960).
Mr. Shriver was born in Towanda, Kansas, July 6, 1912, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed A. Shriver. He attended schools in Towanda and Wichita, graduating from Wichita East High School in 1930 and from the University of Wichita in 1934. After doing some graduate work at the University of Southern California his academic pursuits took him to Washburn Law School in Topeka where he earned his law degree in 1940.
During World War II, Shriver served as an enlisted man and naval officer. Prior to his Congressional career, he practiced law in Wichita. Mr. Shriver is married to the former Martha Jane Currier of Topeka. They have three children (Mrs. Kay Leroux, David, Mrs. Linda Breeding) and four grandchildren. Presently employed as Minority Counsel for the Senate Committee on Veteran's Affairs, Mr. Shriver and his wife now reside in Falls Church, Virginia.
