Biographical History

These are the papers of the descendants of the Hunters of Duns, Berwick County, Scotland. William Hunter was the first of this particular family to come to Virginia. He settled in Fredericksburg, Va. around 1741 and became a prominent merchant. A few of these papers are those of James Hunter, his son, but the majority concern Martha Taliaferro Hunter; Dr. Charles M. Hitchcock, her husband, and Eliza ["Lillie"] W. Hitchcock, their daughter. Dr. Hitchcock was an army surgeon in the 1830s and settled in California in 1851. He went into private business in San Francisco and amassed a fortune. His wife and daughter were brilliant social figures of their times. Lillie Hitchcock married Benjamin Howard Coit.
