Thomas McAdory Owen, was the first director of the Alabama Department of Archives; also an editor, bibliographer and Robert E. Lee enthusiast.
Thomas M. Owen (1866-1920) was a lawyer, historian, and founder and director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

Thomas M. Owen, lawyer and historian, was responsible for the establishment of the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History by legislative act in 1901.
Owen was born in Jonesboro, Ala., in 1866 and married Marie Susan Bankhead. He was active in a wide variety of historical organizations including the Sons of the Revolution in Alabama, the Southern History Association, United Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Alabama Library Association and many more. His wife published (posthumously in 1921) his "History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography."
