Biographical History

Merchant, real estate developer and entrepreneur of Johnstown, Pa., and Wilmington, Del.

Daniel Cauffiel, one of three sons of Daniel and Mary Hammer Cauffiel, was born on June 23, 1867, probably in Johnstown, Pa. He married Elizabeth E. Leventry, with whom he had seven children. His early life was spent in Johnstown, where he and his brothers Joseph and Samuel Hammer Canffiel operated a coal and stone brokerage business started by their father. From this they expanded into the ownership of a small coal-mining company, the Sunnyside Coal Company, and real estate development. Cauffiel's involvement with the local streetcar company brought him into contact with T. Coleman du Pont and Arthur James Moxham, who were managing the local interests of the Louisville branch of the du Pont family. These included The Johnson Company, an important manufacturer of street railway track, and the Johnstown Passenger Railway Company. Cauffiel assisted the du Ponts in these enterprises, particularly the development of home sites around The Johnson Company's plant. This led to his being chosen to do real estate work in other parts of the du Ponts' street railway and mining empire, including Kentucky, Alabama, New York State, California and Mexico.

In 1907, T. Coleman du Pont offered Cauffiel a full-time position with the Du Pont Company at Wilmington, Del. He ultimately became General Manager of the Real Estate Department and Vice President, in which capacity he arranged the acquisition of numerous plant sites. He continued to share in his Johnstown enterprises, with his brother Samuel acting as agent, and also began a real estate business at Wilmington. He also bought an estate at Bellevue north of the city that became his principal residence. Cauffiel died on January 12, 1930.
