Thomas Bewick was a noted English wood engraver, artist, and naturalist.

Born near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1753, Thomas Bewick was a wood engraver and ornithologist whose illustrations for History of British Birds are considered his greatest achievement. He is also known for illustrating various editions of Aesop's Fables. He carved in hard woods and used tools normally favored by metal engravers, which enhanced the fine details of his work.

Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), is well-known for his wood engravings, and in particular, those produced for various editions of Aesop's Fables. His unique technique involved using metal engraver's tools to carve against the grain into hard woods. An avid ornithologist, Bewick is best known for his "History of British Birds."

Bewick, a British wood engraver, lived in London and Newcastle upon Tyne. He engraved wood blocks for "General History of Quadrupeds" (1790), "History of British Birds (1797 and 1804), and others, and left unfinished illustrations for "History of British Fishes". His work for the latter two are the subject of his letters.

Thomas Bewick was a skilled and influential wood engraver, known primarily for his depictions of animals and birds. By designing as well as engraving his compositions, he raised the level of engraving from a reproductive medium to an art form; his other technical and artistic innovations inspired a generation of engravers and heightened both the aesthetic and practical levels of wood engraving. His masterwork was A History of British Birds, which also showed his skill as a naturalist. Bewick also published books in his home town, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), wood engraver, was born at Cherryburn House, near Eltringham, Northumberland, in August 1753. He was apprenticed to the engraver Ralph Beilby (1749-1817), with whom he subsequently entered into partnership in Newcastle. Bewick executed cuts for children's books, 1771-1774, and engraved blocks for Select fables (1784), A general history of quadrupeds (1790), History of British birds (1797 and 1804) and The Chillingham bull (1789). He died at his home in Gateshead on 8 November 1828.
