U.S. senator and U.S. representative of California.
Cole was a U.S. Representative and later a U.S. Senator representing California from 1867 to 1873.
Cole was a US senator from California.
A politician and lawyer, Cole was admitted to the Bar of New York State, 1848; mined gold in California, c.1849-50; practiced law in San Francisco, 1850-51, and in Sacramento, California, beginning 1852; edited Sacramento Daily Times, 1856- ; was elected member, Republican National Committee, 1856-60; worked as district attorney, City and County of Sacramento, 1859-62; U.S. House of Representatives, at-large representative from California, 1863-65; U.S. Senate, senator from California, 1867-73, chairman of Committee on Appropriations, 1871-73; practiced law in California, 1873-c.1922. He was an organizer of the Central Pacific Railroad Company in Sacramento. Cole was commissioned as a captain in the Union Army in 1863.
