Biographical History

Max Scheler was born August 22, 1874 in Munich, Germany. He received his doctorate in 1897 at the University of Jena. His inaugural dissertation was accepted there in 1899. He taught philosophy at Jena University from 1900-1906, and at Munich University form 1907-1910. A freelance writer until 1919, he produced an unusually large number of publications. In 1919 he became professor of philosophy and director of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Cologne. Scheler died May 19, 1928 in Frankfurt on the Main. His contemporaries, such as Ortega y Gasset and Heidegger considered his demise an irreplaceable loss.

Maria Scheler born in 1891, was Scheler's third wife. A few years after Max Scheler's death, she began editing his works. The bulk of her editing took place from 1954 until her death in 1969.

Manfred S. Frings is emeritus professor of philosophy who resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He taught and lectured at many institutions of higher learning, among them Cologne, Freiburg, Oxford and The Sorbonne. He has authored, edited and translated over thirty books and published well over one hundred articles for professional journals. Since 1970, he has been editor-in-chief of the Collected Works (Gesammelte Werke ) of the philosopher Max Scheler. Due to international scholarly interest, some of Frings work on Max Scheler has been translated into Chinese, Japanese and French. Frings has discussed Scheler's philosophy in-depth with Martin Heidegger and in private audience with Pope John Paul II.
