Biographical History
John Basil Lamar was a Representative from Georgia. Born in Milledgevill, Baldwin County, Georgia on November 5, 1812. He attended Dr. Beman's school at Mount Zion, Ga. and Franklin College (now University of Georgia) at Athens in 1827. He later moved to a plantation near Macon, Bibb County, Ga. in 1830 and engaged in agricultural pursuits. John Lamar was the brother of Mary Lamar Cobb (Mrs. Howell Cobb) and the son of Zachariah Lamar. He became a member of the State house of Representatives in 1837 and 1838 and was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress and served from March 4 until July 29, 1843, when he resigned. He was a trustee of the University of Georgia from 1855-1858 and a delegate to the State convention which adopted the secession ordinance in 1861. During the Civil War, Lamar served in the Confederate Army as an aide on the staff of General Howell Cobb. He was wounded in the battle at Cramptons Gap, Md. and died the following day, September 15, 1862.
