Born to William Hendricks and Ann Parker Paul in Madison, Indiana, John Abram Hendricks (1823-1862) married Frances E. Norwood, with whom he had six children. In addition to serving in the Mexican War as captain of the 16th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Hendricks enlisted in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the Civil War. He was killed at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, in 1862.
