Biographical History
From the opera in 3 acts with libretto by Joseph R. Fry. Composed 1841. Overture is originally from the unfinished opera Cristiani e Pagani, ca. 1838 and was transferred to Aurelia the Vestal without changes.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Composed about 1853.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Composed 1852. First performance New York, 1853, Jullien Orchestra. This symphony was long presumed to be lost, but a young music student, Joseph R. Harvey, proved conclusively in his masters' thesis in 2000 that this enigmatic manuscript from the Library Company of Philadelphia, labelled Adagio sostenuto and The breaking heart symphony are one and the same.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Written for Jullien's Orchestra. Composed 1853. First performance New York, 24 December 1853, Jullien's Orchestra, Louis Antoine Jullien conductor. May be the first use of saxophone in an America orchestral work. Quotes the ancient Latin Christmas hymn Adeste Fideles in the finale.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Composed for Mrs. H.L. Bateman's play. First performance 19 March 1860.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Composed 1854.
