Biographical History
The Center for Peace and Justice was in the Catholic Student Center near the University of Iowa campus, it grew out of work done by John Dennis Govert, of the Association of Campus Ministers. Govert was followed by John Hand as director. The Center usually had one paid staff member and was home to diverse groups including the United Farm Workers strike support committee, the amnesty for draft resisters committee, an anti-B-1 bomber group, War Resisters' League, and the Allen Kelly Legal Defense Fund (supporting a Rock Island draft resister arrested on his return from Canada). The Center was closed in 1975, but its constituent groups continued many of its activities.
