Biographical History

The Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 through the efforts of Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin and was the first hospital in America designated exclusively for the care of the sick poor. As the nation's first hospital, the Pennsylvania Hospital was also the first to treat mentally-ill patients humanely. The hospital helped shape the views of generations of Americans towards medical and psychological care. The Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, which was located in West Philadelphia, refers to the institution's Department of the Insane.
