Carpegna family.

The family Carpegna di Gabrielli, descended in 962 from Armileone Carpineo, obtained from the emperor Ottone the donation of twenty-four castelli in Montefeltro. In 1140 the family divided into three branches: the first of which flourished well; the second died out after three generations; the third had its origin at Montefeltro from which the dukes of Urbino descended. In 1223 Raniero and Ugo bought the castle of Miratorio and in the sixteenth century Giovanni came into possession of the marchesato of Rosina, in the Valley of the Tiber.

In 1463 the family divided into two separate branches. From one of these branches two cardinals emerged, Ulderico in 1633 and Gasparo in 1670. Ulderico was appointed bishop of Gubbio in 1630, of Todi in 1638, of Albano in 1666, and Frascati in 1671 followed by Palestrina, Sabina, and Porto. He died in 1679. Gasparo di Carpegna, titular archbishop of Nicea and a datario under Clement X, collected a famous library and a museum of Christian antiquities. He became bishop of Sabina, vicar of Rome, and vice-chancellor of the church. He died in 1714. The Cardegna family gave the cardinal's papers and other materials to the Vatican Archives in 1753.

The family died out with Count Francesco Maria, who with his will of September 25, 1747, named his nephew Antonio Gabrielli, son of Laura di Carpegna and Mario marchese Gabrielli, as heir, with the obligation of assuming the title of count of Carpegna. The counts of Carpegna then became Gabrielli and inherited in 1865 the property and titles of the Falconieri princes. Dante has subtly memorialized the "greatness of soul" of an early ancestor with his reference to "Guido di Carpigna" in his La divina commedia (Purg., canto xiv, 98).
