Biographical History
George Hopkins was a son of Sir William Hopkins, who was headmaster of Newport School on the Isle of Wight and Charles I's host during his negotiations with the Parliamentarians in late 1648. His petition claims that he and members of his family "endured many long imprisonments" for their support of the monarchy, as well as the loss of their fortune. George settled in Ireland after the execution of Charles I. On January 13, 1663, the Duke of Ormonde, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, ordered Lord Orrery to pay two thousand pounds to George Hopkins, but it is not known whether he actually received the sum.
