Biographical History

The Territorial Board of Medical Examiners was established in 1882 (1882 NM Laws, Chp. 55, Sec. 1-16). In 1895 the duties of the Board were transferred to the newly established Territorial Board of Health (1895 NM Laws, Chp. 7, Sec. 1-11). In 1901 the duties of the Board were expanded to include the regulation of itinerant drug vendors and the Board was re-named the New Mexico Board of Health (1901 NM Laws, Chp. 18, Sec. 1-12). In 1907 the Board of Health's duties were transferred to the newly created Board of Health and Medical Examiners (1907 NM Laws, Chp. 34, Sec. 1-10). In 1923 the Board of Health and Medical Examiners' duties were transferred to the newly created Board of Medical Examiners (1923 NM Laws, Chp. 44, Sec. 1-12). Approximately between 1948 and 1985 the Board was also known as the State Board of Medical Examiners. The Board was administratively attached to the Regulation and Licensing Department by executive order (85-34). This order rescinded in 1988 by executive order (88-31) removed the Board from the supervision of the Regulation and Licensing Department. The Board is subject to the Sunset Act (NMSA 12-9-11 to 12-9-21) which establishes a periodic review and evaluation of the need and continued existence of certain agencies and boards by the legislature (1981 NM Laws, Chp. 241, Sec. 20; 1985 NM Laws, Chp. 87, Sec. 5;!991 NM Laws, Chp. 189, Sec. 9-10).
