Born in Spartinburg, South Carolina, Sherwood Young Reams (1812-1887) lived in Tennessee before immigrating to Texas in 1835. During the Texas Revolution, Reams served in Captain James C. Neill’s regiment and helped defend the Alamo. Although he was discharged on account of his health, he reenlisted in the Texas Army in July 1836. After being honorably discharged three months later, Reams married Sarah Atkinson the following year. Two years after Sarah’s death in 1853, he married Mary Backman and the couple lived in Peach Creek until 1870, when they moved to Buckhorn.
