Biographical History

First bishop of the Philippine Independent Church. A Roman Catholic priest, Aglípay was excommunicated in 1899. In 1902 he was co-founder of the Philippine Independent Church, often referred to as the Aglipayan Church. He became a spokesman for Unitarian ideas in the church and visited the United States in 1931 at the invitation of the American Unitarian Association.

Archbishop Gregorio Aglipay y Labayan (1860-1940) was born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, and entered the seminary in Ilocos Sur in 1883. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1890. Aglipay was excommunicated in 1899 after rebelling against the Spanish in the Philippine Revolution of 1896. In 1902, he was co-founder of the Philippine Independent Church and appointed as its first bishop. The church is now often referred to as the Aglipayan Church. Aglipay continued to fight for the independence of the Philippines and ran for president of the commonwealth in 1935, but lost to Manuel Quezon. He became a spokesman for Unitarian ideas in the church and visited the United States in 1931 at the invitation of the American Unitarian Association.
