Shiplacoff, A. I. (Abraham Isaac), 1877-1946.

A.I. Shiplacoff (1877-1946) was a socialist, New York State Assemblyman and labor leader. A Russian immigrant, he trained as a teacher and was active in the Brooklyn Labor Lyceum throughout his life. He served as the labor editor of the Jewish Daily Forward (Forverts), secretary of the United Hebrew Trades and in 1915 was the first socialist to serve in the New York Assembly. He opposed American involvement in World War I and opposed the creation of a State Constabulary. In 1918 he was indicted on charges of violation of the Espionage Act. The charges were later dropped. He was elected to the New York City Board of Aldermen for 1921-22 and was general manager of the Joint Board of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers. He was secretary of the city Socialist Party from 1925 to 1929, and taught at the Rand School of Social Science and the International Pocketbook Workers Union.
