When giving the broadcasts Smiley was Chairman of Cobb & Co's Old Drivers Association. Said to be one of Cobb & Co's last drivers, he began in 1877.
Frank Smiley was the stage coach driver on whose experiences Will Lawson's book, When Cobb and Co. was king ..., is partly based and to whom it is dedicated. The letter was enclosed in a copy of the book auctioned by Kenneth Hince on 9 November, 1983.
