Biographical History
Henri Joseph Etienne Gouraud (b. 1867-d. 1946), Brigadier General in the French Army, received his commission into the infantry in 1890 and spent his early military career in posts away from France, notably in Morocco. In May 1915 he was placed in command of the French expeditionary force, and it was during the Dardanelles campaign that he lost an arm and broke both legs. Yet he returned to active duty shortly thereafter, leading the Fourth Army which played a significant role in halting the German offensive at Marne. Following the armistice, General Gouraud was appointed High Commissioner of Syria, commander in the Levant, governor of Paris, and was a member of the Supreme Allied War Council. He retired in 1937.
