Biographical History
John Lloyd-Butler, son of Los Angeles oil businessman Samuel M. Butler and Julia (Lloyd) Butler, owned the Rancho Santa Clara del Norte in Saticoy, California from 1915 until his death in 1973. He took an interest in railroading, American railroading in particular, but was never able to devote himself to the hobby until he retired from ranching. Lloyd-Butler and his second wife, Margaret, spent the last ten years of his life traveling the American railroads and collecting on the subject.
The Lloyd-Butlers met the president of Occidental College, Dr. Arthur Coons, and his wife at a garden party in 1958 and soon after became donors to the college. In 1971, they first visited the Occidental campus and found the college and its library to be suitable in which to bequest his railroad collection.
Monographs and periodicals cataloging commenced in August, 2007 and was completed in May, 2008. From 1973-May, 2007, monographs were filed alphabetically by author and title and periodicals were filed by title. Document cases continue to be filed by their original labeling but now also include a correlating number from 1-45. Document cases of ephemera will be processed in the future as resources allow. Some items from David K. Todd may have been interfiled with John Lloyd Butlers ephemera collection.
