Biographical History
Samuel Grosvenor Wood was born in Philadelphia, PA, July 18, 1883; started his motion picture career acting (1908) under the name Chad Applegate and in 1915 became an asst. director to Cecile B. De Mille; he directed a number of Gloria Swanson films at Paramount in the early 1920s and moved to MGM in the 1930s; he directed films such as The Marx Brother's A night at the opera, Goodbye Mr. Chips, For whom the bell tolls, and Pride of the Yankees; he was president of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals and testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947; he died Sept. 22, 1949.
