Emeritus Professor, University of South Florida.
Born in California in 1925, Dr. Hoffman's educational background includes work at Stanford University (A.B.) Mills College (M.A.), the University of Illinois, and culminates in a Ph. D. from the University of the Pacific. He lives in Lutz, Florida with his wife Nancy Maguire Hoffman, and has four children: Heather, Ted, Jeffrey and Jennifer. Hoffman started with the University of South Florida in 1962 as a member of the Humanities Department, specializing.
In the arts and letters of Asia, particularly Japan, as well as teaching courses in music history and composition for the School of Music. He has composed in most idioms, including songs, chamber music, choral pieces, works for wind ensemble, and orchestral pieces, and has been performed throughout the United States as well as in twenty-five foreign countries. He is the recipient of two Fulbright grants, has been a Fellow of the Japan Foundation, has been a participant in three National.
Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars, and awarded grants by the United States Office of Education and the American Association of State Universities and Colleges. His most extensive research is concerned with contemporary international-style Japanese music.
