Biographical History
Otis Bigelow Young was born in Dodge Center, Minnesota, in 1899 and came to Southern Illinois University as a professor of physics in 1929. In 1938 Professor Young became the chairman of the Physics Department. In 1939, Young was appointed chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Administration Program at Southern Illinois University, a program designed to train pilots in case of general war mobilization. After the war, in 1945, he was appointed Director of the Veterans Information Service Bureau, and was chairman of the Committee on Post-War Education for Veterans. He was actively involved in the procurement of war surplus property for post-war educational purposes. In 1946, Young was the sponsor of a physics club at Southern Illinois University, and in 1949, a chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honor Society. Otis Young was also active in radiological civil defense. In 1956, he was a member of the "Second Monitor Course of Federal Civil Defense" in Battle Creek, Michigan, and in 1957 taught the first instructor's course in Radiological Civil Defense in Southern Illinois. In 1958 he was Radiological Officer of the Illinois Survival Plan.
