Biographical History
Des Moines University opened in 1890 as Highland Park College, a non-denominational school. In 1927 it became a Christian fundamentalist school when it was taken over by the Baptist Bible Union of North America. There was ongoing conflict between fundamentalist and evolutionist teachings at the university which led Board of Trustees President, Dr. Thomas T. Shields, to dismiss the entire faculty in 1929. Student protests over these firings led to a riot. Edith King was identified as one of the riot leaders and expelled. The Board of Trustees closed the university in September 1929.
